Hey! Welcome back to the 4th installation of our series Sit On It, where we’re gonna take a look at a massage chair feature, and break it down for you. This week, we’re talking about the massage mechanism that works on your back, and what it does for you.

Rollers? Tracks?

When it comes to massaging your back, there are two main ways: fixed points and rollers. Fixed points are massaging nodes that cannot be moved to different areas of the back. Rollers are massaging nodes able to transverse across the back. They move along the back with the help of roller tracks that glide the roller mechanism. However, roller tracks have different variations too; there are S-tracks, L-tracks, SL-tracks, etc. S-tracks are tracks that go from the neck/shoulders to the lower back, and are contoured to the shape of the human body. L-tracks are tracks that go from the neck/shoulders all the way down to the buttocks/thighs. SL-tracks are a combination of the S- and L-tracks where the track goes from the neck/shoulders to the buttocks/thighs while the track is contoured to the shape of the human body.

The Roller Mechanism

Obviously, we want to elaborate on the roller mechanisms since most modern massage chairs utilize a roller massage mechanism. The roller mechanism typically has 4 to 6 rollers that are used massage your back. Speaking of massaging your back, the roller mechanism is able to imitate a set of massage techniques, which can be found on most massage chairs. It usually is able to perform kneading, tapping, kneading & tapping, and shiatsu. Kneading, as the name implies, will use the rollers to dig into muscles, much like the action of kneading dough. Tapping uses the rollers to quickly tap muscles along the back. A combination of kneading & tapping will perform the circular kneading in conjunction with tapping. And finally, shiatsu is used to hit specific acupressure points along the back to relax back muscles.

What does it do for me?

Well, let’s go over what this massage mechanism does for you. This is the main focus of the massage chair. It has the ability to relax muscles along your back, and to relieve you of pain. By utilizing different massage techniques, it has the ability to release tension in your muscles, and promote healing in your body. By relieving back pain and thigh muscles, the body becomes more limber and flexible, which can help prevent potential physical injuries and traumas. That, we believe, is the main focus of the massage mechanism: to relieve pain and muscles, and help prevent possible injuries.
